The Momella Lakes (also Momela Lakes) are a series of smaller lakes in the Arusha National Park in Tanzania . They are located in the northeast of the national park and are only partially filled with water all year round. The Momella lakes are alkaline and salty. They are mainly fed by groundwater and are characterized by a high fluorine content .

Emergence

The lakes were formed when a violent eruption of Mount Meru , similar to the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980 , collapsed the east wall of the crater about 6000 years ago and a stream of water, mud and stones poured east into the steppe. Another collapse of the caldera , 1,800 years later, changed the course of the river that fed the lakes and isolates all lakes except Lake Momella.

Animals

Sometimes thousands of flamingos live on the lakes, which can sometimes turn the shallow water pink. The Momella Lakes feed a variety of native and migratory water birds.
