In Europe , corn has been made into starch since the late 19th century . Mondamin GmbH was founded in Berlin in 1913 . At the beginning their production consisted exclusively of corn starch, which over time gained increasing importance in cooking and was sold under the name Mondamin . The name itself was borrowed from the word for "corn" in the Ojibwa language ( monda (u) min ). According to legend, the god Mondamin was the friend of man. He died fighting the legendary chief Hiawatha , and corn plants grew out of his buried body.

In 1917 the food manufacturer Knorr became the owner of Mondamin GmbH because Knorr got the British shares in Mondamin GmbH that had been confiscated by the German Reich; this compensated for the fact that the Knorr branches in France and Italy were confiscated by the German war opponents. The Knorr company was taken over by Maizena in 1959 . Maizena has now been absorbed by the Unilever Group .
