history

MoneyGram International, Inc. was formed following the business combination of Travelers Express and Integrated Payment Systems Inc. Moneygram was originally founded as a subsidiary of Integrated Payment Systems. MoneyGram Payment Systems Inc. founded MoneyGram International Ltd. in 1997. At the time, MoneyGram Payment Systems Inc. owned 51 percent of the company while the other 49 percent was owned by Thomas Cook Group . April 1998 acquired Viad Moneygram Payment Systems Inc. for $ 287 million. Moneygram was picked up by Viads Travelers Express in Minneapolis . At the end of 1990, MoneyGram Payment Systems had customers in over 22,000 locations in 100 countries.

In 2003, Travelers Express gained full ownership of the MoneyGram network. Travelers Express became an independent company. January 2004, Travelers Express was renamed MoneyGram International Inc. June 2004 Moneygram became a publicly traded sole proprietorship. In early 2006 the company had more than 96,000 international agents in regions such as the Asia Pacific, Eastern Europe and Latin America. January 2009 Pamela Patsley became Chairman and CEO of the company. November 2010, Dallas became MoneyGrams global headquarters. The company has global operations and information technology centers in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The Chinese company Ant Financial Services Group (operator of Alipay ) wanted to take over MoneyGram. However, the purchase was not approved by the US authority CFIUS in 2018 .

Germany

In Germany, branches can be found in all major cities, which are mostly run by small businesses. The company is under the control of the FCA. In Germany, ID is required to carry out money transfers. MoneyGram is a financial service provider, but not a bank approved in Germany.

money transfer

At a MoneyGram branch, a sum of money can be transferred between two people by making a deposit in a branch. The payer receives a reference number. After receiving the reference number from the payer, the recipient can have the amount of money intended for him paid out in a branch at his place of residence almost without delay. The payer and the recipient must identify themselves. The basic idea is to enable cashless payment transactions for people who do not have their own checking account. These money transfers are used in particular for remittances from migrants . Numerous critics accuse this system of financing terrorism, among other things.
