Monk is a subway station in Montreal . It is located in the Arrondissement of Le Sud-Ouest at the intersection of Boulevard Monk and Rue Allard. Trains on the green line 1 run here . In 2006, 1,156,323 passengers used the station, which corresponds to the 59th place out of a total of 68 stations on Metro Montreal .

Building

Entrance pavilion

The station, designed by the Blais & Bélanger architecture firm, was created using an open construction method . This resulted in a very high and extremely spacious hall. Their walls are clad with brown, rustic-looking bricks at the level of the platforms. Above that, vaulted ceilings, huge semicircular recesses and pillars loosen up the vastness. The distribution level spans the tracks in the form of a bridge. On the surface there are two smaller brick entrance pavilions .

The platform level with two side platforms is at a depth of 18.3 meters . The distances to the neighboring stations, measured from station end to station start, are 844.29 meters to Angrignon and 1062.85 meters to Jolicoeur . There are connections to two bus lines and a night bus line of the Société de transport de Montréal .

art

Pic et Pelle

On the distributor bridge are two metal sculptures by Germain Bergeron over 6 meters high, consisting of painted metal parts that come from recycled light fittings. The work Pic et Pelle ("Pickel and Shovel") depicts two construction workers at work in an abstract form. In Quebec French , the phrase travailler au pic et à la pelle means "to work hard and long". A third figure (a foreman) was planned, but was not carried out.

history

The station opened on September 3, 1978, together with the Atwater – Angrignon section of the green line. The namesake is the Boulevard Monk, named after Sir James Monk (1745-1826), who was Montreal's chief judge from 1793 to 1820.
