Monkton Farleigh Manor House

Monkton Farleigh Manor House is a manor house 5 km from Bradford-on-Avon and 8 km from Bath , in the English county of Wiltshire . The 16th century house was built on the site of a former Cluny Abbey founded in 1125 and English Heritage has listed it as a Grade I Historic Building.

history

In 1536, Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset , then also Viscount Beauchamp , was awarded the grounds of the former abbey, his church, the bell tower, the churchyard, the manor and church foundation of Farleigh , as well as all the lands there.

The oldest part of the manor house, which was built in the 16th century using materials from the former priory, is on the west side. The house was expanded in the 17th century and further additions were made in the 18th century. Above the Ajimez window one can find hewn fragments of the adjacent abbey from the 12th and 13th centuries, e.g. B. a coffin lid with an incised cross. The cellars of the house were part of the abbey's original convent buildings. Part of the altar tomb with a heavy stone relief was integrated into a mantelpiece in the nearby Monkton House in Broughton Gifford .

From 1737 to 1804 the Seymour family lived at Monkton Farleigh Manor House. In 1812 John , the son of Richard Long of Rood Ashton , leased the house from the Bishop of Salisbury and after his death in 1833 it fell to his son John . The Longs leased the property until 1842, when it passed to Wade Browne . After his death in 1851, it was given to various tenants and finally the church commissioners rededicated the manor to a free estate. Part of the property and the mansion itself were sold to Sir Charles Hobhouse, Baronet , in 1873 , whose descendants still own it today.

The Bishop Jewel's Room in the old west wing is named after John Jewel , who died in the mansion in 1571.
