Monkton House (East Lothian)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Monkton House is a mansion in the Scottish hamlet of Old Craighall in the East Lothian Council Area . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish Monuments List in the highest category A.

A tower house was probably built on the site in the 16th century . An earlier construction period is also discussed in part. When Monkton House was built in the 1680s, the Tower House was incorporated into the mansion. The adjacent stables, however, are of an older date. They were built around 1625. Historically, the property belonged to the Cistercian Newbattle Abbey .

description

Monkton House is on the southern edge of Old Craighall. The masonry consists of rubble from gray and reddish sandstone . The three-story building has an L-shaped floor plan, in which the former Tower House, which forms the north-eastern end, is integrated. Both parts of the building were stylistically merged into one unit. The building parts in the inner corner are of later date. Likewise, a flat extension on the west side, which dates from the 18th century. A grooved cornice crowns the two-winged main portal there. Furthermore, bronze work adorn the entrance area. Together with the stables, the buildings once enclosed an inner courtyard on three sides. The north-east wing was demolished, however, so that the manor house and the former stables remain as individual buildings opposite.
