Gabriel Zehender

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gabriel Zehender (* probably in the 16th century in Groß Mausdorf ; † possibly 1535 in Basel ) was a German or Swiss artist.

Life

Evidence of the painter's activity for the period between 1527 and 1535 in the areas of today's Federal Republic of Germany and Switzerland. A guild book entry from 1529 suggests that he was already living in Basel at that time; In 1535 he was referred to as a refugee there. Possibly he created the title page for the Mainz court court order of 1516/1521, which Albert Otte wrote .

It is possible that Zehender was identical to the monogrammist GZ, who was active on the Upper and Middle Rhine from around 1516 to 1521 and worked as a draftsman for topiary during this time ; 493. This is said to have used a monogram "GZ", which is on a woodcut. Zehender may have lived in Hagenau for some time before he settled in Basel, where he is listed as a citizen in the red book of the Zunft zum Himmel in 1529. The monogrammist GZ was close to Hans Baldung Grien and with his drawing Maria and Johannes before Christ on the cross , which was made around 1520 and is now in the British Museum's possession, possibly laid the trail to a lost painting by Matthias Grünewald . It could also be father and son. It was later doubted that there were two people with that name. In the Swiss artist lexicon it is said that Nagler's thesis cannot be proven. According to the information provided there, Zehender came from Großmaußdorff, a West Prussian village near Elbing.

The painter Hans Zehender , who died around 1570, could have been related to Gabriel Zehender, see also Johann Kaspar Zehender

Works

Portrait of a married couple, around 1525

Gabriel Zehender is known as a draftsman and painter, especially for his portrait of a married couple, which is painted in oil on fir wood and measures 40.9 × 51.5 cm. This image was at times interpreted as a portrait of Martin Luther and his wife, but this was rejected again. It is now in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid.
