Einar Meulengracht
Jens Einar Meulengracht (born April 7, 1887 in Copenhagen , † December 26, 1976 ) was a Danish medic .
Life
Meulengracht's father was a factory engineer. Meulengracht studied medicine at the University of Copenhagen from 1905 and was approved in 1912 . He then worked as a doctor in a Serbian military hospital in Valjevo during the Balkan Wars in 1912/1913 .
After his return he continued his training in Denmark at various hospitals, for example at Rigshospitalet , the Copenhagen University Clinic, in internal medicine under Knud Helge Faber , and at Bispebjerg Hospital in the Pathological Institute under Ettermann and there in the medical department under Victor Scheel . His doctorate took place in 1918, he became a specialist in internal medicine and specialized in "gastric, intestinal and blood diseases". From 1924 he was chief physician of the medical clinic at Bispebjerg Hospital and from 1935 professor of internal medicine at the University of Copenhagen. In 1941 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
His main area of work was internal diseases, especially diseases of the liver, such as the bilirubin metabolism disorder Morbus Meulengracht , named after him , which he described in 1918 as "hereditary hemolytic jaundice".
He also researched polymyalgia rheumatica (also known as Holst-Meulengracht disease ) , the then often fatal pernicious anemia, and in 1934, in his essay Treatment of hematemesis and melaena with food, developed the so-called Meulengracht diet for the treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding with vomiting . While the treatment previously consisted of absolute bed rest and a restrictive diet with only ice cubes and small amounts of milk, he recommended a light diet with antacids and iron supplementation as well as early mobilization.
In Copenhagen he was a medical authority and during his 33 years as chief physician he also ran a private practice with many prominent patients. This included the Danish King Frederik IX. who also became a personal fruit.
Meulengracht was considered a "striking" person, despite his small stature, and was an avid hunter . He married his wife Olga in 1920, with whom he had two children. He died at the age of 89 and was buried in the garrison cemetery in Copenhagen.
