Monolithic Church
A monolithic church , from Greek. Μονόλιθος , Monólithos , "Einstein," "uniform stone" from μονο- , mono- , "individual" and λίθος , lithos , "the stone " is one of a natural rock whipped Church . Monolithic churches represent a special form of the rock church .
The best-known examples include the churches in Lalibela in Ethiopia , which were carved out of the rock in the 12th and 13th centuries. They belong to the world cultural heritage of mankind . In Europe, such rock-hewn churches can be found in Saint-Émilion and Aubeterre ( Charente department , France ). The church in Aubeterre was laid out in the 12th century by Benedictine monks.
