The Monowai is a submarine volcano north of New Zealand about halfway between the Kermadec Islands and Tonga . It reaches a height of 132 meters below sea level, with a water depth of about 1500 meters. The basaltic volcano is located at the southern end of the Tonga Ridge , a little away from the Kermadec volcanoes . Small parasitic cones are found north and west of the volcano's flanks. The mountain is named after a Royal New Zealand Navy research submarine that carried out research on it. To the northeast of the volcano, about 8 km away, is a 8.5 by 11 km submarine caldera that is more than 1500 meters deep.

The mountain was first identified beyond doubt as a volcano based on an eruption in 1977. It is unclear whether an eruption of this volcano was observed as early as 1944. Outbreaks have been recorded regularly since then. Water discoloration, violent gas leaks and areas where deep water rises have been observed on the sea surface. An occasional rumble can also be heard.
