history

The park in the period 1925–1930

The area around Mont des Arts has always been densely populated. The seat of government of the Duchy of Brabant with the palace and library of Burgundy was already located on Mont des Arts in the Middle Ages. After the palace burned down in 1731, King Leopold II had the idea of converting Mont des Arts into an art center as an art center by the end of the 19th century and redesigned the square.

The center of the square is the garden with numerous seats and the 9-jet fountain, which was temporarily created for the 1910 World's Fair by the landscape architect Pierre Vacherot . The square is surrounded by numerous museums, the so-called Brussels Museum Mile . There you will find the collections of paintings and sculptures of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts , the Royal Library of Belgium , the Museum of Musical Instruments , the BELvue Museum , the Museum of the National Bank of Belgium as well as the General State Archives and the Royal Belgian Film Archive. There is also a church and a chapel. At the beginning there is the statue of King Albert I on horseback, and it ends with a monumental staircase leading to the Coudenberg.

Remains of the Palace of Coudenberg are still underground today under the Royal Square in the Coudenberg excavation site .

The temporary park was to be demolished as part of urban renewal in the 1930s . In the 1950s, the course was redesigned by the landscape architect René Pechère to its present-day appearance.

Current situation
