Montañita is a place on the Santa Elena Peninsula in Ecuador . It is located in the parish of Manglaralto in the canton of Santa Elena in the province of Santa Elena . The town is on the Ruta del Sol highway (National Road E-15) and has beaches on the Pacific Ocean .
Montañita, traditionally a fishing village, is considered by some to be the ideal place for backpackers and surfers and today it lives to a large extent from tourism. The place was originally a hippie stronghold for dropouts in the 1960s , today it serves as a surfing and nightlife paradise for young people.
The simple construction, accommodation made of bamboo wood and the streets made of white sand give the town its characteristic appearance. The town has developed enormously in recent years. There are now many better hotels and many very good restaurants. But the focus is still on a younger audience.
Montañita can be reached from Guayaquil by bus (approx. 3.5 hours) or car (approx. 2.5 hours).
