particularities | Artificially created mountain from the overburden of coal mining |
The Monte Barbara is a green heap in the Saarland city of Bexbach . It was artificially created from the overburden of the coal mining of the former St. Barbara mine in Bexbach. The dump is integrated into a landscape park and can be climbed via a hiking trail. On the summit plateau is an eight meter high statue of Saint Barbara , the patron saint of miners.
location
Monte Barbara is directly adjacent to the flower garden in Bexbach and has the town's glider airfield at its feet.
Summit plateau
On the plateau of Monte Barbara there is a statue of the patron saint of mining.
St. Barbara
The statue of Saint Barbara was created by Lothar Messmer and originally erected in 1955 on the site of the former St. Barbara mine and the former St. Barbara power station. With the construction of the new Bexbach power station, it was moved to Monte Barbara in 1980. At the feet of the monument there is an information board that explains the history of the monument. It also contains the prayer of Saint Barbara. The plateau is currently in poor condition. The statue and the information board show traces of vandalism.
Refuge
The refuge indicated in the hiking maps is no longer available. Only the remains of the foundation walls can be found. This area, too, has meanwhile been made unusable by vandalism.
