Monte Kali (herrings)

As Monte Kali or Kalimandscharo (derived from the Kilimandscharo ) is a very large tailings pond of potash , respectively. It is located near Heringen (Werra) in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district near the Hessian-Thuringian border in the Werra potash district , a mining area in East Hesse and West Thuringia. The white dump, visible from afar, reaches its summit plateau at an altitude of 530  m above sea level. NHN and has therefore also become a tourist attraction.

The heap began to be backfilled in 1973. In July 2017, the mountain covered an area of ​​around 99 hectares and consisted of around 209 million tons of heaped overburden salt. It grows by a further 900 tons per hour of production. The mined potash deposits are always accompanied by sodium chloride (NaCl, table salt), the potash content being between 20 and 35%. For each ton of potash extracted, several tons of overburden are created, 96% of which consists of table salt. A 1.5 km long conveyor belt transports the spoil salt up the mountain.

tourism

The area has discovered the unmistakable mountain and its neighboring heaps as an attraction and calls itself the "land of the white mountains". Guided hikes up the mountain are offered, which attract around 5,000 visitors annually. The difference in altitude from the foot of the mountain to the summit plateau is almost 200 m, the view from the summit plateau extends up to 100 km.
