History and architecture

The church after the Allied air raids

The origin of the church is in the 13th century. The massive west tower also dates from this time . It has been independent since it was separated from the mother parish of St. Severinus in Lindlar in 1554. The church in the 19th century is said to have become too small for the large number of believers, so that the church ship was demolished after many years of donation campaigns . A three-aisled neo-Gothic nave was then rebuilt on round pillars with a transept and extended main choir from a yoke . The side choirs close in a semicircle, they are flanked by sacristies . The tower is divided by three coupled sound openings in the bell storey, the slate pyramid was added to it in 1601. From 1943 to 1945, temporarily homeless Cologne and foreign civil prisoners were taken in here.

In the last days of the war, two explosive bombs destroyed part of the church in an air raid . The bombs hit the aisle and the tower and caused the vault to collapse. A makeshift renovation took place three years later, and at the beginning of the 1970s, the war-time damage was repaired more thoroughly. The original vault in the nave was replaced by a flat folding ceiling. A sacristy was added later .
