The Montreal Arena , also known as Westmount Arena , was a hall designed for ice hockey games in Westmount, Canada, in the agglomeration of Montreal . It was on the corner of St. Catherine Street and Wood Avenue. It was opened on December 31, 1898 and offered space for 10,000 spectators, of which 4,300 were seats. After the Dey's Arena in Ottawa , which opened in 1896, it was only the second hall specially designed for ice hockey events.

First, it offered a home ground for the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada teams Montreal Hockey Club , Montreal Shamrocks, and Montreal Victorias. Between 1909 and 1918, the Montreal Wanderers and Montreal Canadiens played indoors.

In 1915 artificial ice equipment was added. On January 2, 1918, the hall burned down completely. While the Canadiens found a new venue with the Jubilee Arena , the Wanderers were disbanded as no alternative hall was available for them.

The owners of the Montreal Arena, the Arena Company , built the Arena Gardens in Toronto , where she 1917, the National Hockey League - franchise opened.
