The Moorooduc Highway is a connecting road in the south of the Australian state of Victoria . It connects the Frankston Freeway in Frankston with the southern part of the Mornington Peninsula Freeway in Mount Martha . It is a four- to six-lane street with a median. Together with the Mornington Peninsula Freeway, it forms the main artery from Melbourne to the Mornington Peninsula .

history

The highway originally began at the junction with Frankston Flinders Road in Frankston South and joined the Nepean Highway (B110) in Moorooduc South. In the 1970s it was widened south of Sages Road and served as an alternative to the Frankston bypass that was not built. In the 1990s, the Mornington Peninsula Freeway was connected to the (renamed) Moorooduc Highway.

course

The Moorooduc Highway serves as a non-standard road link between the two parts of the Mornington Peninsula Freeway (S11) and begins at the southern end of the Frankston Freeway (S11) (which connects to the northern section of the Mornington Peninsula Freeway). It runs along the east side of the Frankston Commercial Center as a six-lane street with level connections and a traffic light intersection with Frankston Flinders Road. From this traffic light crossing the Moorooduc Highway became narrower and has only four lanes. The road passes the town of Mornington , right next to the highway, and ends at the northern end of the southern section of the Mornington Peninsula Freeway (S11).

The Moorooduc Highway is considered a particularly dangerous stretch of road, on which many traffic casualties are to be lamented due to excessive speed and unregulated intersections. Recently it has at the intersections with the Benton Road, the Eramosa Road and Bungower Road installed roundabouts. The confluence with Sages Road now has traffic lights after a particularly large number of serious and even fatal accidents have occurred there. South of Sumner Road in Baxter , the speed limit is 100 km / h.

Frankston bypass

As soon as the Peninsula Link opens (plan: early 2013), it will take over through traffic, while local traffic will run on the Moorooduc Highway. This will ensure that through traffic no longer has to use the known congestion-prone roundabouts at Mornington and the intersections at Frankston. This will significantly improve the flow of traffic.
