Nepean Highway in Gardenvale (Melbourne) |
The Nepean Highway is a trunk road in the south of the Australian state of Victoria . It connects Melbourne city center with Portsea at the tip of the Mornington Peninsula along the east bank of Port Phillip . It is the main road link from the southern suburbs to Melbourne city center.
history
In the 1850s, the Arthurs Seat Road was built on this route , a sandy dirt road that connects the farms south of Melbourne (which belonged to Alexander Balcombe ) and the settlements in the southern part of Port Phillip to Point Nepean . At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the street was renamed Point Nepean Road and since 1948 it has been officially called the Nepean Highway. This name refers to Point Nepean, which in turn was named after the British politician and colonial administrator Sir Evan Nepean (1751-1822).
From the 1950s to around 1980, the road between downtown Melbourne and Mordialloc was gradually expanded into a four-lane expressway without a median. The widening of the bridge in Mordialloc was finally completed in early 2009.
course
Melbourne to Mornington
The Nepean Highway begins at the end of Swanston Street at the junction with Flinders Street in Melbourne city center. She crosses Princes Bridge , where it becomes St. Kilda Road , a four-lane boulevard that is also used by trams. She passes the Victorian Arts Center (from which she is numbered S3) and the Shrine of Remembrance before reaching St. Kilda Junction. Soon after, at the intersection with Carlisle Street , it changes its name again to Brighton Road . It is only officially called 'Nepean Highway' from Glen Huntly Road in Elsternwick . Tram route 67 (Carnegie Tram) travels this street until it turns onto Glen Huntly Road.
From Glen Huntly Road, the speed limit increases from 50 km / h to 80 km / h and the road becomes an eight-lane city motorway with a median. In Moorabbin , the width will be reduced to six lanes again as the road runs through the suburbs of Cheltenham and Mentone . Then, after the roundabout in Mordialloc, it becomes a four-lane street without a median with a maximum speed of 60–70 km / h. The path continues directly along Port Phillip to Frankston and up to Olivers Hill , from where you have a good view of Frankston and the bay.
Mornington Peninsula
Shortly after Mount Martha , the highway joins the Mornington Peninsula Freeway (S11) until it turns towards Dromana . Here the Nepean Highway becomes Point Nepean Road and from here Arthur's Seat is easy to reach, from where you have a beautiful view of the bay and on a clear day you can see the skyscrapers of Melbourne (distance: approx. 45 km). Anthony's Nose is a point between Dromana and McCrae where a rock step emerges on the south bank of Port Phillip. The highway runs between The Nose and the shore of the bay. It was named by Charles La Trobe in 1839 . In the 1920s, The Nose was modified to prevent the street from flooding every day at high tide.
The B110 state road leaves the Mornington Peninsula in Sorrento and follows the ferry to Queenscliff , from where it marks the Bellarine Highway . The Nepean Highway, however, continues 4 km further northwest to the village of Portsea , where it ends at a roundabout. There is the entrance to Point Nepean, a former defense battery and quarantine station of the Commonwealth of Australia.
