The Mornington Peninsula Freeway is a highway in the south of the Australian state of Victoria . It currently consists of two parts. The northern part connects Springvale Road in Chelsea Heights with the Frankston Freeway and the EastLink in Carrum Downs . The southern part connects the Moorooduc Highway in Moorooduc South with the Boneo Road in Rosebud . The gap should be closed from 2013, resulting in a continuous freeway from the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne to the tip of the Mornington Peninsula .
history
The freeway was first designated as Freeway Corridor F6 in the 1969 Melbourne Transportation Plan . In the 1970s, the Wells Road Bypass was expanded to the Frankston Freeway . Further construction of the freeway, including a Frankston bypass , was planned, but there was a change of government in 1982. The new state government did not want a freeway along the coast, but instead operated the expansion of Wells Road towards Braeside .
The southern section of the freeway, which was already called the 'Mornington Peninsula Freeway' (or Dromana Freeway ), between the Nepean Highway in Dromana and Jetty Road in Rosebud was completed in 1975. The section between Dromana and Moorooduc South to the Moorooduc Highway was built in the mid-1990s.
course
The Mornington Peninsula Freeway is not yet completed. VicRoads has declared for decades that the traffic on this route is not dense enough to warrant a Frankston bypass, which would be the middle section of the freeway. The two parts of the freeway are now connected by a highway that runs through downtown Frankston.
The northern section begins on Springvale Road (S40) in Chelsea Heights and runs 7 km south to the confluence of the EastLink (M3) at Carrum Downs.
The southern section, about 20 km long, branches off the Moorooduc Highway (S11) in Moorooduc South , crosses the Nepean Highway (B110) at Mornington and again north of Dromana . It then passes Dromana and ends in the south of Rosebud on Boneo Road (C777). This southern part of the freeway leads through vineyards and gardens and past stud farms.
The Mornington Peninsula Freeway (including the Moorooduc Freeway) runs largely parallel to the Nepean Highway and is intended to relieve it.
Further expansion
The Frankston Bypass ( Peninsula Link ) is currently under construction and should be completed in 2013. It bypasses the city in a wide arc to the east, which starts at the confluence of the EastLink, runs through Baxter and Moorooduc and ends on the Moorooduc Highway (S11).
An extension of the freeway north through Braeside to Dingley Village is also planned. At the Center Dandenong Road there , the later connection to the also planned Dingley Highway will take place.
In the south, expansion to the freeway standard is planned. The Boneo Road is to be connected to the south of Rosebud without any elevation and the freeway to the west, past a Rye , will continue to Blairgowrie . At the Melbourne Road there , it is to be connected to the Nepean Highway (B110).
