Morning sheets

Morgenblätter is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 279). The work was composed in 1863 and premiered on January 12, 1864 under the direction of the composer at a ball in the Sofien-Bad Saal in Vienna.

Remarks

The waltz was written by the composer for the association of journalists and writers Concordia (today Concordia Press Club ) and was later dedicated to it. At the same time there was a new, then nameless waltz by Jacques Offenbach , who happened to be personally in Vienna, but was not present at the Concordia Ball on January 12th. Apparently, in order to suggest a rivalry between Strauss and Offenbach , the Concordia gave the Strauss waltz the title Morgenblätter and Offenbach's work the title Abendblätter . Both waltzes were performed by Strauss during the said ball and were well received by the audience. However, Offenbach's evening papers later fell sharply in favor of the public, while the Strauss waltz has remained in the concert programs to this day. Parts of the waltz were also used in the operetta Wiener Blut , compiled by Adolf Müller based on Strauss motifs . The playing time is about 10 to 11 minutes, depending on the musical understanding of the respective conductor.
