Moritz is a Catalan brewery headquartered in Barcelona with a brewing tradition dating back to the mid-19th century.

history

The founding story of the brewery begins with Louis Moritz Trautmann from Pfaffenhoffen in Alsace , who emigrated to Catalonia at the age of 20 and settled in Barcelona. In 1856 he became director of a small brewery in Barcelona in the St. Antoni district in the then newly built district of Eixample . The year 1856 is therefore now considered to be the "year of birth" of Moritz beer, which was and is made according to the Pilsen brewing method. In 1858 Louis Moritz Trautmann bought the brewery of his employer Ernesto Ganivet and in 1864 acquired another smaller brewery, which was also in Sant Antoni - on the Ronda de Sant Antoni 39; This brewery is now considered the first industrial brewery in Spain and Moritz developed into the leading beer brand in Barcelona by the end of the 19th century. At the world exhibition in Barcelona in 1888 , Louis Moritz won a gold medal with his beer.

The company founder Louis Moritz Trautmann died in 1920. His descendants enlarged the brewery considerably in the following years, which resulted in a tripling of sales. After a merger with another company, the brewery was renamed Cervezas Barcelona SA .

Due to the economic slump as a result of the oil crisis in the 1970s, the descendants of Louis Moritz decided in 1978 to close the brewery.

Todays situation

After a 26-year stoppage of the brewing business, the 5th and 6th generation of the descendants of Louis Moritz Trautmann in Catalonia started production again in 2004 and Moritz SA is today again operating under its historical company name and its historical address in the Sant Antoni district of Barcelona, in the Ronda de Sant Antoni 39 . Moritz is brewed under license by the La Zaragozana SA brewery in Saragossa . Today this beer is sold all over Spain and exported to 35 other countries.
