biography
Moritz Fischer (in Hungarian: Fischer Mór (ic) ) rendered outstanding services to Hungarian industry and art through his Herend porcelain factory , which he founded near Veszprém in 1839 . At first he had to struggle against innumerable difficulties before he managed to lead his manufactory to success. Herend, however, became a veritable art institution that could compete with the other famous porcelain companies of Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur , Sèvres and Meißen . Herend was represented at numerous international exhibitions with interesting and artistic exhibits, for which it received numerous awards and first prizes.
In recognition of his achievements, King Franz Joseph I raised him to the Hungarian nobility in 1869. After his death, the porcelain factory was continued by his family.
