Morley Cohen
Morley Cohen (born November 18, 1923 in Winnipeg , † August 18, 2005 ibid) was a Canadian surgeon.
Cohen studied medicine at the University of Manitoba with a degree in 1948 and at the University of Minnesota , where he trained as a surgeon (Medical Fellow 1951 to 1953 and Research Assistant 1953/54) and received his doctorate in 1954. In 1955 he was an instructor there. He was then back in Winnipeg at the University of Manitoba as a surgeon until his retirement in 1987. He was there from 1967 to 1984 head of cardio and thoracic surgery.
As an assistant in the research laboratory of Clarence Walton Lillehei , he was involved there in the early 1950s with Herbert E. Warden and Richard L. Varco in the latter's pioneering developments in open heart surgery, including a blood supply technique called crossed circulation , which soon after was replaced by heart-lung machines. Lilleihei, Varco, Warden and Cohen received the Lasker ~ DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award for this in 1955 .
