The Mormacpride class of the Marad Design C3-S-33a was a ship type built in eight units for the US shipping company Moore-McCormack .

history

The design was commissioned by the US shipping company Moore-McCormack from Ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation and listed as type C3-S-33a by the United States Maritime Administration (MARAD). Internally, the type received the abbreviation C-3-1624 Design, as it was designed for the South America, Baltic Sea and Great Lakes trip on lines 1, 16 and 24. The construction of the eight ships, each costing a good ten million US dollars, was commissioned by MARAD as part of the Long Range Shipbuilding Program from the Sun Shipbuilding Company Chester, Pennsylvania and Todd's Shipbuilding, San Pedro, which launched the ship series in 1960 delivered until 1962. Some of the ships were finally returned to MARAD after the departure of the Moore-McCormack Lines operated services and from 1977 to 1987 part of the National Defense Reserve Fleet (NDRF). Most of the ships in the class were now being scrapped.

technology

When it was built, the C-3-1624 design represented a contemporary general cargo ship design with a slightly streamlined bridge house just behind the center of the ship, a heavily overhanging stem with a bulge and a cruiser stern.

The layout of the holds was that of a conventional general cargo ship, but in many ways had modern details. The hatch covers with a large degree of deck opening on the main deck, in conjunction with the large hydraulic tween deck hatches, were intended to ensure problem-free vertical access to the cargo. The transhipment facilities consisted of contemporary loading trees. The ships had five holds, some of which were designed for refrigerated cargo, and deep tanks for liquid cargoes. Additional cargo tanks were arranged under some holds.

The superstructures were completely air-conditioned.

The type of ship reached speeds of a good 18 knots thanks to its geared steam turbine drive.
