A zentai ( Japanese 全 タ イ , from Zenshin Tights 全身 タ イ ツ , Zenshin taitsu , German "full-body tights ") is a very tight-fitting full-body suit that also includes the head, hands and feet (sometimes also individual toes). The term is a registered trademark of Fets-Fash. Zentais are mostly made of stretchy materials such as nylon or elastane , microfiber , velvet , cotton, wool or other fabrics. Suits that do not cover the head are called catsuit .

use

Zentais are used in theater and ballet, among others. The minimalist and often monochrome clothing should let the personality and shape of the performer take a back seat in order to emphasize the role or the dance itself. Traditional Japanese bunraku puppeteers wear tight-fitting, black zentais to become "invisible" against the black background and thus reinforce the illusion of the moving puppets. Similar suits can be used in image and film technology to make people "invisible" in whole or in part using color replacement processes (blue screen technology with the opposite effect).

In contrast, artists often wear colorful or patterned zentais in order to model muscles and the physique as visibly as possible. In the cosplay scene, zentais are used to represent a character as faithfully as possible.

It is possible for the wearer to see out of the suit to a limited extent and also to drink through the fabric.

The suits are used, for example, at parties, sporting events and music festivals as so-called morphsuits , which have been manufactured by a company based in Edinburgh since 2009 . The suits are available in various mostly eye-catching colors or with motifs such as national flags. An interesting aspect for the wearer is the possibility of being able to act out undetected.

BDSM and fetishism

Zentais can also be found in the context of fetishism in connection with exhibitionistic tendencies.

In a BDSM scenario, a zentai can be used for general depersonalization in order to lower the inhibition threshold of the active partner ( top ), comparable to the use of a mask or hood, when performing actions. Health risks are acute shortness of breath (the substances used are impermeable to air when soaked) (see breath control ) and hypothermia of the wearer.
