Mehrzad, who was born with acromegaly , is dependent on crutches due to his extreme height and who suffered from a leg 15 cm shorter after a bicycle accident in his teens, only got into sitting volleyball at the age of 23. Within a few years he developed into an effective outside attacker in Iranian sitting volleyball clubs and became Paralympic winner in 2016 with the Iranian sitting volleyball team. There he usually did not play from the beginning, but ensured with a seated two-handed block height of 1.96 m and a seated reach radius of 2, 30 m for opposing teams regularly avoiding his side.
