Morwen Thistlethwaite

Morwen B. Thistlethwaite is a knot theorist and professor of mathematics at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He made significant contributions to the knot theory and the group theory of the Rubik's Cube .

Thistlewaite studied mathematics at Cambridge University from 1964 to 1967 and at the University of London in 1967/68 (master’s degree). 1968 to 1972 he was at the University of Manchester , where he received his doctorate with Michael Barratt. From 1972 he studied piano with Tanya Polunin , James Gibb and Balint Vazsonyi and gave concerts in London before deciding in 1975 to pursue a career in mathematics. 1975 to 1978 he was at the Polytechnic of North London and 1978 to 1987 at the Polytechnic of the South Bank in London. In 1987/88 he was visiting professor at the University of California in Santa Barbara and from 1988 at the University of Tennessee .
