Overpainted Ottoman inscription

The mosque of Islam Aga was built in 1720 and renewed in 1870, shortly before the Ottoman Niš was conquered by the Serbs .

Of the twenty mosques from Ottoman times, it is the only one that is still in use. There is another one in the Niš Fortress that has been converted into a gallery and one near the University Rectorate that was damaged during the Anglo-American bombing of the city in 1944. In 1954 the Mosque of Islam Aga was placed under state protection by the government of Yugoslavia .

On the night of August 27-28, 2003, the mosque was damaged during a celebration by FK Partizan football fans who were celebrating qualification for the Champions League . A group of a hundred hooligans threw stones at the mosque and smashed two windows on the building.

The mosque was set on fire and damaged on March 17, 2004 by Serbian demonstrators in response to the riots and attacks against churches and monasteries in Kosovo , but was subsequently completely restored by August 2013.
