The Motobécane 350 was a motorcycle by the former French manufacturer Motobécane , 779 copies were built from 1973 to 1976.
History and technology
In 1972 Motobécane presented a three-cylinder two-stroke motorcycle with a displacement of 350 cm³. The only French motorcycle manufacturer at the time had only been on the market since 1970 with a model with a displacement of 125 cc. The factory-designated D 353 motorcycle (in France also offered under the “Motoconfort” brand) was conventionally constructed with a classic double loop tube frame and 18-inch tires (front and rear), a telescopic fork with 110 mm suspension travel and a two-arm swing arm. The piston edge controlled two-stroke engine with separate lubrication was also delivered in Germany with three 24 mm Gurtner carburetors, a contactless thyristor ignition system and four mufflers at a price of 3990 DM. In 1973 a model was presented that was supposed to be particularly economical with electronic gasoline injection from Bosch . A reduction in consumption of 50% at partial load and 30% at full load compared to conventional carburettor models was promised. A pump delivered the fuel to the injection valves at a constant 2 bar. The point in time and the injection duration were determined by a central control disk with a photocell. The results were the reduction of the specific fuel consumption from 340 g / kWh to 240 g / kWh and the unburned hydrocarbons from 11.2 g / km to 1.93 g / km.
Until the end of production, the Motobécane 350 was available for purchase with either a carburetor or injection. Although only four models with gasoline injection were produced, Motobécane is now considered a pioneer of this technology.
In 1974, at the Paris Salon, a 500 cc model with a two-stroke engine was presented to the Japanese motorcycle manufacturers - u. a. Kawasaki and Suzuki - Paroli to offer. This model should also be very economical , also equipped with an electronic fuel injection . However, the model did not go into series production due to the oil price crisis . The market for the Motobécane 350 also collapsed as a result; 190 motorcycles were sold in 1974, just 13 in 1975 and only four in 1976.
