The Motorola International 3200 was one of the first GSM- enabled cell phones in which all the technology required for making calls was integrated in the handset . It was introduced internationally by Motorola in 1992 . It is now a collector's item.

With dimensions of 334 × 43 × 67 mm, it had a weight of 520 g. The battery of the device known colloquially as the bones had a talk time of 110 minutes with a capacity of 700 mAh and, as one of the few class 4 GSM terminals (transmission power 2 W), a maximum standby time of 24 hours. In practical use, however, it did not last a working day with the factory-supplied battery, which is why larger batteries were very popular, even if the device became even more unwieldy.

The Motorola 3200 was built in five different versions, some with different key assignments, but with the same software. In addition to the normal Motorola 3200, the mobile phone was sold under the labels of Bosch , Blaupunkt , Pioneer and Ford .

You can still use the phone with a normal SIM card today . Only version 1.6 only works with old SIM cards due to a different SIM card voltage.

The device was only suitable for making calls; Sending SMS or MMS was not possible.

The direct successor to the Motorola International 3200 model was the Motorola International 3300 model . It differed in its lower case depth, the possibility of charging the battery directly via the mobile phone, and being able to receive SMS and cell broadcast . In contrast to the 3200 (ITU), the 3300 model had final approval for operation in all GSM networks (FTA).

A planned Motorola International 3500 with a transmission power of 5 watts was announced, but never came onto the market, probably because of the discussion about radiation exposure from cell phones that was already emerging at the time.

Distribution in Germany

This model was sold in Germany as the first mobile phone model in the new GSM networks from "D1 Telekom" and "D2 privat", which were also launched in 1992. In the year it was launched, it cost DM 3,000 to DM 8,000 with a contract (currently around € 2,348 to 6,261 adjusted for inflation).
