The Nokia 3210 is a mobile phone from Nokia and was launched in 1999.

History and description

The Nokia 3210 was the first commercially successful cell phone without an external antenna . A total of 160 million devices were sold.

In terms of functionality, Nokia based the inexpensive 3210 on the predecessor model Nokia 6150 , the first dual-band cell phone from Nokia, which had appeared a year earlier as a model in the upper price range.

The introduction of the T9 function, which made it possible to write text messages more conveniently, was just as innovative in this price range . Now a matter of course, this was a rare luxury when the cell phone was launched. Thanks to the integrated antenna, the 3210 looked more stylish and modern than the cell phones common at the time, where the antenna often protruded several centimeters from the housing. The antenna technology was not yet fully developed, which is why the frequency of repairs was one of the highest of all Nokia cell phones ever produced. The silver-coated ceramic antenna easily broke at its attachment, whereby the HF transmission output stage was overloaded by the now very poor standing wave ratio and failed.

What also made the 3210 one of the most popular models of its time was the ability to change its appearance individually with interchangeable cover shells (called "Xpress-on" by Nokia), which was introduced in the previous model and continued with the 3210 in an improved form. On the 3210, not only the front shell but also the rear shell were interchangeable, which triggered a boom in creative mobile phone design that continued in the successor models.

The Nokia 3210 was designed with a vibrating alert. However, Nokia decided, among others in most European countries, to deliver the model without a vibration alarm. Affected cell phones could easily be upgraded by appropriate cell phone repair workshops.

In the lighter and more functional successor, the Nokia 3310 , much of what had been introduced in the 3210 was continued in an improved form. With hardly any reduction in the frequency of errors, the antenna technology was more mature after Nokia had made fundamental design changes.
