The engine run-on circuit is an electrical circuit in motor vehicles that makes it possible to remove the ignition key from the ignition lock without switching off the engine.

Additional electrical consumers, such as special signal systems , radio devices and air conditioning, are often installed in vehicles used by the rescue service and the police . These can have a high power consumption that cannot be covered by the car battery alone, or only for an insufficiently short period of time. In situations in which these consumers have to be operated for a longer period of time and the car cannot be connected to the local power grid, it is necessary to keep the engine running to generate additional electricity. With normal ignition mechanisms, the engine can only continue to run if the key is in the ignition lock. This represents an increased risk of theft if the electrical loads have to be operated while the vehicle driver is absent. In order to solve this problem, which occurs when the vehicle is absent, the continued running of the engine enables the engine to continue running even when the ignition key is removed when the clutch is disengaged (in automatic vehicles "P" position of the selector lever ) and when the parking brake is applied, thus allowing the vehicle to be locked from outside at the same time. In some emergency vehicles, hazard warning lights and / or blue lights must also be switched on in order to switch on the engine run-on circuit.

Even if a burglar manages to get inside the car, despite the engine running, starting the journey is only possible with an ignition key turned in the ignition lock. The engine is switched off by pressing the clutch or brake pedal or releasing the parking brake without the ignition key inserted.
