Mount & Blade is an action role-playing game released for Microsoft Windows in 2008 and the name for the series following the game. The computer game was developed by the independent Turkish development studio TaleWorlds Entertainment and distributed by Paradox Interactive through both retail and digital platforms such as Steam or GOG . It has elements of a strategy - and building game on. A special feature of this role-playing game is the lack of fantasy elements , which is not typical of the genre . The game has no linear plot. A medieval world is made available to the character, in which he can act independently and without the objective of the game.

Gameplay

At the beginning of the game you create your own character in a character editor . The action takes place in the fictional, medieval country of Calradia, which is torn by the power struggle of rival kingdoms.

On the world map of Calradia you can travel to another position in real time with a click. On the map it is possible to interact with fixed places (e.g. castles, villages and cities) or mobile units (looters, caravans, princely armies). It is also possible to carry out certain management aspects of the game on this card.

If you enter one of the places mentioned or enter a battle, the view changes from the map perspective to a third person perspective and you are able to control the character using the mouse and keyboard, as is typical for role-playing games.

An elementary game idea of Mount & Blade is that you not only lead yourself, but an entire mercenary company that you have built yourself into battle. These mercenaries can be recruited as recruits in the villages on the world map and upgraded to stronger units through training or acquired in taverns.

successor

A remake called Mount & Blade: Warband was released on March 30, 2010. The most important innovation was a multiplayer mode. In addition, another race was added to the single player mode and it was now possible for the player to become king. A few minor improvements have been made and the graphics have been improved compared to the predecessor.

Another sequel with the title Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword was released on May 3, 2011. The game world is based heavily on the plot of the novel With Fire and Sword by the Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz . There is also a multiplayer mode here.

In the fall of 2011, a Taleworlds employee revealed that he was currently working on the successor to Mount & Blade . On April 19, 2012, a Napoleonic Wars DLC was released for M&B Warband . This DLC was started as Mod Musket Madness (later Mount and Musket ), but then released as Napoleonic Wars by Taleworlds in collaboration with the modders . The multiplayer expansion for Mount & Blade: Warband takes place during the last Napoleonic Wars .

On September 27, 2012, a teaser trailer for the latest game in the series was released. Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord will not be distributed by the publisher Paradox Interactive like the previous parts , but directly by TaleWorlds.

On October 16, 2014, the DLC Mount & Blade: Warband - Viking Conquest for the game Mount & Blade: Warband was announced. This is not developed by Taleworlds, but by the development team of the mod Brytenwalda .

Modding

A large modding community developed for all parts of the game series. In the first part the mods were limited to improvements of the single player mode, while for the successor Warband numerous mods for the multiplayer mode were developed. Some mods completely change the multiplayer mode.
