The stratovolcano Balbi forms the highest point on the island of Bougainville with a height of 2715 meters . North of the summit there is a chain of five craters, one of which contains a lake. Fumarole activity can be observed in crater B on the western flank of the Balbi . The volcano has not erupted in historical times; there are only uncertain records of a possible eruption around 1825 (± 25 years).
