3rd Beijing Biennial 2008

The third biennial was held from July 8th up to and including August 24th, 2008 under the title “Colors and Olympism”; Due to the postponement of one year, it took place at the same time as the Olympic Games , which were also held in Beijing , and also took up thematically. A total of 747 works by artists from 81 countries were exhibited at exhibitions in the National Art Museum of China (July 8th - August 12th) and in the Exhibition Hall of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (July 7th - August 24th). Mainly sculptures and paintings were shown at the Biennale ; According to the curator Wang Yong, this should not only pick up on current trends in Chinese art, but also the renewed global interest in painting. Criticism of the fact that this would exclude contemporary, avant-garde art production, was relativized by Wang Yong by saying that “innovation does not necessarily mean new media and new art forms”.

This biennial was also barely noticed internationally; in Art in America it has been criticized as a "lackluster survey exhibition" showing "hastily commissioned paintings of heroic Chinese soldiers" while relevant contemporary art from China would only have been shown at private gallery exhibitions at the same time.

One prize received among others for an Olympic sports picture:

  • Sandra Ackermann (* 1974), Germany: The jumpers. 2006. Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 200 × 150 cm
