Marc Schmitz (* 1963 in Hamburg ) is a German artist who lives and works in Berlin .

Life

Marc Schmitz works as an artist and curator in the media of painting, installation , object, video and land art . Schmitz studied philosophy at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, and at the FU Berlin as well as free art ( multimedia ) at the art academy in Munich with Klaus vom Bruch (2000) and (multimedia) at the academy for new media in Berlin (2001) . Since taking part in the China Art Exposition International in Beijing in 1998 , his activities have initially focused on Asian countries such as Japan (Machida City Museum Tokyo 2002) Korea ( Busan Biennale 2004), Mongolia (FEEL FELT 2005) and China (BIAB 2nd Beijing International Art Biennale 2005). Marc Schmitz researches the fundamentals of the various media he uses and pushes them to their limits. Central themes of the artistic work are space and time. The international ongoing project Spaces examines perception in the relationship between space and the human body, with exhibitions on Sculpture Quadrennial Riga and Zendai MoMA in Shanghai (2008), Land Art New Mexico USA (2009), Trio Bienal, Rio de Janeiro (2015) Nakanojo Biennial, Japan (2015) and Marrakech Biennale, Awalnart Morocco (2016).

In his painting, layers of color document the processual nature of time. His works convey sensuality and reflection and invite the viewer to enter into a mutually constructive dialogue while addressing the limitless space with all of the viewer's senses.

Marc Schmitz has been awarded various international prizes, including a. with the first prize of the world exhibition EXPO 2000 in Hanover (art for expo), with the jury prize of the 10th Cairo Biennale and the special award of the Busan Biennale 2004. Works by Marc Schmitz are represented in collections such as the National Art Gallery Beijing, Swatch Collection, Peace Art Hotel Shanghai or WSI New York.
