Mount Burney is a striking, snowy, cone-shaped mountain peak on Cook Island in the archipelago of the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic . It rises northwest of Mount Harmer .
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 2013. It is named after the future British Rear Admiral James Burney (1750-1821), who served the British navigator and explorer James Cook as a midshipman on his second (1772-1775) and third South Seas voyage (1776-1780) ) and was an eyewitness to Cook's murder on February 14, 1779 in Hawaii .
