It stands 469 meters high and is known for its striking shape and history in the area's coal mining industry . Coal was mined here from 1857 to 1991. Mount Keira was formed when the Illawarra Abortion formed 60 to 80 million years ago through folding of the earth's crust .
Keira is an Aboriginal term for a large lagoon or high mountain. The Aborigines themselves called the mountain Djera , which means something like turkey.
Mount Keira also refers to a district of Wollongong that includes the summit and the southern flank of the mountain.
