The Mount Owen is a mountain in the west of the Australian state of Tasmania . It is located in the West Coast Range , just east of Queenstown .

Like most mountains in the West Coast Range, it was named by geologist Charles Gould , after Richard Owen . The higher mountains were named after those who opposed Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, and the lower after those who advocated it. The northwest slopes of the mountain are clearly visible from Gormanston and the Linda Valley.

Details

A map in Geoffrey Blainey's book The Peaks of Lyell from 1900-1910 names the northwestern peak North Spur . The northern slopes, clearly visible from the Lyell Highway , show high levels of erosion from forest fires, furnace fumes, and heavy rains.

The mountain has small glacial lakes in the upper part of its eastern flank, which show the degree of earlier glaciation in the valley of the King River .

The western slopes loom over Queenstown and are regularly covered in snow in winter.

The east flank to the northeastern summit “hangs” over the west bank of Lake Burbury and formerly the tracks of the North Mount Lyell Railway ran below it.

Access

On the north-west summit (North Spur) there are converters for television and telephone. An access road for motor vehicles was built for the construction of these facilities.
