Movimiento Electoral di Pueblo

The electoral movement of the people ( pap . Movimiento Electoral di Pueblo , MEP for short, Dutch Electorale Volksbewegung ) is a social democratic political party founded in Aruba in 1971 . She is a member of the Socialist International .

The party was founded in 1971 by Gilberto François "Betico" Croes together with former party members of the AVP / UNA-PIA-PRO with the aim of a separate status for Aruba. The name of the party in the island's Creole language Papiamentu is based on the name of the left-wing party Movimiento Electoral del Pueblo in neighboring Venezuela, which was founded in 1967 . In 1975 it became the largest political party in Aruba. In 1977 a referendum was initiated, in which 57% voted for a separate status of the island, which was achieved in 1986. In the 1985 elections, however, it was not the MEP but the Christian Democratic AVP that gained a majority. In 1985 Croes was in a car accident and died in 1986. Nelson Oduber succeeded him as party leader. After the MEP regained the majority in 1989, Oduber was Prime Minister of the island in several cabinets (1989-1994, 2001-2009). After the 2009 elections, the MEP lost its majority in parliament. The party was in opposition from 2009 to 2017 but won the 2017 elections and entered government in November 2017.
