Sheikha Musa bint Nasser al-Missned ( Arabic موزا بنت ناصر المسند, DMG Mūzā bt. Nāṣir al-Musnad ) is the second of three wives of Hamad bin Chalifa Al Thani , Emir of Qatar until 2013.

Life

She was born in a Qatari coastal city into a well-known merchant family. Her father, who fell out with the then Emir Chalifa bin Hamad Al Thani , lived with the family temporarily in Egypt and Kuwait. The emir's son negotiated for the family to return and married 18-year-old Musa in 1977. Bint Nasser received a degree in sociology from the University of Qatar in 1986 . Her husband replaced his autocratic father as Emir of Qatar in a bloodless coup in 1995.

Musa bint Nasser has been Chair of the Qatar Foundation since then and President of the Supreme Family Council since 1998. She is also Vice President of the Supreme Council for Education and the Supreme Council for Health. In 2003 she was appointed Special Representative for Education by UNESCO and has been responsible for education on the UN Advisory Council for the Millennium Development Goals since 2012 and on the steering committee of the UN Global Education First Initiative . With her foundation, the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), she is committed to transforming Qatar into a knowledge society . She is considered to be the driving force behind the establishment of the Education City of Qatar.

Qatar's decision to support the Libyan rebels in the Arab Spring in 2011 is attributed to their influence. Their public visibility and their determining influence on politics and economic decisions in the country are very unusual for a Gulf state. Some of their proposals - such as making English the main language of the University of Qatar - have sparked protests and have been partially withdrawn. Since the handover of power from her husband to her son in 2013, she has faded into the background.

She has received a number of awards, honorary doctorates and has been a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts des Institut de France since June 2009 .

She and her husband have seven children, including the current Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani .
