The Mozart plane tree is an oriental or oriental plane tree ( Platanus orientalis ) on Rennweg 14 in Vienna's 3rd district, Landstrasse . It has been under protection as a Viennese natural monument since December 22, 1936.

history

The age of the so-called Mozart plane cannot be precisely determined. Estimates speak of around 230 years. According to tradition, the name is based on the fact that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , who gave piano lessons in the home of the botanist Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin , therefore regularly passed the tree.

A memorial stone anchored in the ground next to the tree describes the tree as the " Jacquin plane tree ", which was planted around 1780 during Nikolaus Jacquin's tenure as director of the Botanical Garden .

Due to a relocation of the property boundary, the plane tree, which bears the number 9 as a natural monument, is now on the sidewalk outside the fence around the Botanical Institute.

Since the trunk with a circumference of around 6 meters of the approximately 20 meter high tree is partially hollow, the Mozart plane tree has been classified as endangered by the Vienna City Garden Authority. In order to get an idea of ​​the resistance of the tree to storms, the Rennweg was closed during the night in spring 2009 in order to test the stamina of the tree using rope winches. The type and extent of further maintenance measures were made dependent on the result of this investigation.
