The oriental plane tree or oriental plane tree ( Platanus orientalis ) is a species of plant from the plane tree family (Platanaceae).
description
The oriental plane tree is a tree that reaches heights of up to 30 meters. It has spreading branches and a relatively short, strong trunk with gray to greenish-white bark that flakes off flat. The deeply incised leaves have five to seven narrow, pointed leaf lobes.
The oriental plane tree is single-sexed ( monoecious ), that is, flowers of both sexes can be found on one plant. The unisexual flowers are in round heady inflorescences . The flowering period extends from May to June.
The species has chromosome number 2n = 42.
Occurrence
It is native from Sicily and Greece to the western Himalayas . It forms its own floodplain society on gravel soils close to the groundwater.
The oriental plane tree is a popular avenue tree in southern Europe , Australia and South Africa .

The tree sanctuary of Plataniotissa
The tree sanctuary of Plataniotissa is located near the Greek city of Kalavrita . The two-stemmed plane tree, which, according to legend, already existed in AD 352, is the largest known plane tree with its 23-meter circumference of the trunk base. Inside there are two rooms: a small chancel of 3 × 3.50 m and an adjoining prayer room that offers space for six to eight people.
The plane tree from Tsangarada
The age of the plane tree on the village square of Tsangarada , Greece ( Pelion region ) is given as over 1000 years. The trunk circumference is 14 meters; the tree can hardly be grasped in its entirety. The side branches are as big as massive trunks and partly fused together in the crown. The crown diameter should be around 40 meters. Although the tourists climb around on the tree and occasionally carve the bark, this plane tree looks extremely healthy and vigorous. On the side facing the valley, a cavity in the trunk at the base is closed with a sheet metal. A horizontal side branch is supported with a brick pillar and the overhang has been sawed off.
