Krasi ( Greek Κράσι ( n. Sg. ), From Greek κρασί 'wine' ) is a mountain village on the island of Crete in the municipality of Malia . It is located 5 km south of the town of Malia at an altitude of 600 m on the northwestern foothills of the Selena Mountains . The Kera Kardiotissa monastery is located 1.2 km southwest of the village .

The largest plane tree in Crete is in Krasi . It is estimated to be between 1800 and 2000 years old and has a trunk circumference of around 20 m. Opposite the plane tree is a fountain from the Venetian period with two basins. The spring water is said to have healing properties. The inhabitants live mainly from tourism, agriculture and animal husbandry. In November, the liquor is traditionally outside the houses Raki burned. Krasi is a popular starting point for hikes to the Nisimos plateau , to Mount Karfi and to Tzermiado on the Lasithi plateau . In the village are the birth houses of Antonios Michelidakis, the first Prime Minister of the Cretan State and the artist Maria Zografou and the ancestral home of the intellectual family Alexiou (Lefteris Alexiou, Elli Alexiou , Galateia Kazantzaki Alexiou and Stylianos Alexiou).

archeology

A built grave from the Early Minoan Period (FM I) was discovered southeast of the village . It contained ceramics that showed the Cycladic influence. Two tholos graves from the Early Minoan Period (FM II) were also found - one with a diameter of 4.20 m and the other 2.90 m. A clay pot with an inscription from the Middle Minoan period (MM I) was discovered in a grave.
