Malia ( Greek Μάλια ( n. Pl. ), From omalós 'even') is a place and a municipality on the southern Greek island of Crete . It was named after the coastal town of Malia , which is the seat of the municipality.

As Mallia ( Greek Μάλλια ), the place was recognized as a rural community (kinotita) in 1925 , renamed Malia in 1940 and raised to a town community (dimos) in 1986 with the incorporation of the mountain village Krasi . In 1997 the rural community of Mochos was incorporated with the town of Stalida. On January 1, 2011 ( Kallikratis program ), the municipality of Malia was incorporated into Chersonisos , where it has since formed one of four municipal districts.

Bay of Malia with place

The bay of Malia is one of the most important bathing coasts in Crete. Accordingly, the tourist influence can be felt through numerous hotel complexes, restaurants and a distinctive nightlife. Due to intensive construction work, the boundaries between Limenas Chersonisou in the west of the bay, Stalida and Malia are now blurred.

Attractions

The main attraction is the palace of Malia from the Minoan period, about three kilometers east of today's city .

On the way to the Lasithi plateau one arrives at the mountain village of Krasi. The largest plane tree in Crete stands here, next to it a Venetian spring house . The highest mountains are the Halikas (970 m), the Rachis (801 m) and the Kafala Mochou (636 m).
