The Platia Platanou ( Greek Πλατεία Πλατάνου , Square of the plane tree ' ) was rebuilt around 1935, after the great earthquake of 1933, which destroyed significant parts of the historic city of Kos on the Greek island of Kos .

Location and building

The course is about 4 meters above sea level. In the north is the palm boulevard Leoforos ton Finikon (Λεωφόρος των Φοινίκων also Odos Finikon Οδός Φοινίκων), behind it stands the fortress Neratzia (Κάστρο της Νερατζιάς). The bridge to the fortress built by the Italians begins at this place. To the northeast is the former governor's palace, which was built during the time of the Italian occupation of Kos and today houses the Kos police and court. To the southeast of it is the administrative building of the province of Kos (Επαρχείο της Κω) and behind it the former Turkish bath ( hamam ). In the southwest is the Gazi Hasan Pascha Mosque (Τζαμί του Γαζή Χασάν Πασά), built in 1786 (also: Loggia Mosque ; Τζαμί της Λότζιας). A little to the south is the field of ruins of the ancient agora .

The plane tree of Hippocrates , which is surrounded by a low wall with a railing, occupies a central place on the Platia Platanou . This plane tree also gives the place its name.

Fountain

On the north side of the wall, an ancient sarcophagus was converted into a fountain during the Ottoman rule over Kos (1522 to 1912). The Arabic inscription characterizes the water as the water of Hippocrates .

On the south side opposite the Gazi Hasan Pasha Mosque there was a well house from the Ottoman period. The roof was supported by seven columns with Corinthian capitals . The fountain house was destroyed in the earthquake on July 21, 2017 .

The fountains were used as washing facilities before prayer in the nearby Gazi Hasan Pasha Mosque .

Trivia

On the square of the plane tree, in front of Hippocrates’s plane tree , dozens of people are said to have been hung up by the Ottoman authorities as a deterrent in the course of the Greek (1821–1829) freedom struggle , which had also found supporters on Kos and which failed.
