The governor's palace of Kos (also in short Greek Διοικητήριο , also called Italian Palazzo del Governo or English Eastern Coastal Building ) is located in the city of Kos on the island of Kos ( Dodecanese ), was planned by Florestano Di Fausto and now houses the police and the court of Kos as well as administrative units of the island of Kos. The main facade of the building faces the sea. The building, together with the Neratzia fortress , dominates the northeast side of the port of Kos .

location

The street Akti Miaouli begins at the governor's palace , the east bank street on which there are several villas from the time of the occupation of Kos by the Italians. The building is separated from the sea, about 20 meters away, by the coastal road.

To the north, next to the building, is the hammam . To the west is the Platia Platanou with the plane tree of Hippocrates and the Gazi Hasan Pasha Mosque . To the northwest, separated by the palm boulevard Leoforos ton Finikon, is the medieval fortress Neratzia and 130 meters away is the port of Kos (Mandraki). Adjacent to the south is the Agora archaeological site .

building

The building was designed in 1925 by the Italian architect Florestano Di Fausto and built from 1927 to 1930. The style of this governor's palace is indicative of the architectural style of the time of the Italian occupation of the Dodecanese islands from 1923 to 1943. The style can also be found in the house of the fascists , the Archaeological Museum and a little less in the market hall on the Platia Eleftherias , as well at the community center at the Platia Agias Paraskevis . The same applies to the Linopoti Historical Administrative Center in Linopotis . The style of the architecture was adapted according to the ideas of the new rulers and cleaned of "oriental influences" and carried out based on the Roman Empire in connection with fascist "ideals".

During the occupation of the island by Nazi Germany (1943 to 1945) the military administration was located here. From 1945 to 1947 the temporary British administration was based here. On March 31, 1947, the Greek flag was hoisted on the building.

The building is grouped around a central courtyard with a palm tree. Arcades run around the inner courtyard . A second, small courtyard is to the northwest. The building is about 55 meters long, 36 meters wide and has a polygonal floor plan that covers about 1400 m².

After its construction, the building was the seat of the lieutenant governor of Kos, the police, the court and the paramilitary militia of the Italian fascists , the Black Shirts (the Italian fascist party resided in the Casa del Fascio at today's Platia Eleftherias ).

The building can be visited to a limited extent. Photography is not allowed.
