The Archaeological Museum of Kos ( Greek Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Κω Archeologikó Musío Ko ) is located in the city of Kos on the island of Kos ( Dodecanese ). The building was listed as a historical monument in 1986.

The museum was founded as a result of the 1933 earthquake when a large part of the old town of Kos was destroyed. This destruction of the previous buildings also offered the opportunity to carry out extensive excavations and subsequently set up this museum.

Museum building

The museum is located on Platia Eleftherias ( Freedom Square ) and was built during the Italian occupation of the islands in 1935/1936. The first drafts were made in 1934 and the construction plans probably go back to Rodolfo Petracco . The building itself was built on part of a wall of the ancient city of Kos that is visible in the basement.

The architectural style of the building can also be found on Freedom Square at the House of the Fascists ( Italian : Casa del Fascio ) and a little less at the market hall. On the Platia Agias Paraskevis (Eng .: Agia-Paraskevi-Platz ) nearby you can also find this characteristic architectural style of the time from 1923 to 1943 of the Italian occupation of the Dodecanese islands near a town house . The governor's palace of Kos at the port of Kos has such a style. The style of the architecture was adapted to the ideas of the new rulers and cleaned of "oriental influences" and based on the Roman Empire in connection with fascist "ideals".

exhibition

The Kos Museum has a collection of archaeological finds found on the island on the ground floor. The exhibits on display come mainly from the period from antiquity to the late Roman period.

The collection includes sculptures, mosaics and general information about the island of Kos. A portrait statue from the 4th to 2nd century BC, variously interpreted as Hippocrates . Is on display in the north-western hall.

From 2012 to 2016 the museum was closed for renovations. Some exhibits were severely damaged by the 2017 earthquake.
