The Gazi Hasan Pascha Mosque ( Greek Τζαμί του Γαζή Χασάν Πασά ; also: Hadji Hassan Mosque ) is in the southwest of Platia Platanou and was an Islamic house of prayer in the city ​​of Kos on the Greek island of Kos . Because of its shape with the beautiful loggias (colonnades / arcades), this prayer house is also called the loggia mosque ( Greek Τζαμί της Λότζιας ). The mosque was built in 1786.

The Gazi Hasan Pascha Mosque is located on the Platia Platanou opposite the plane tree of Hippocrates (hence also called the plane tree mosque ) in the middle of the city of Kos. The building is about m above sea level. It is around 100 meters from the Mandraki Port in Kos Town.

To the north of the mosque, the Neratzia fortress is around 60 meters away, and to the east, around 30 meters away, is the Governor's Palace of Kos . The Agora archaeological site is directly adjacent to the site of the mosque to the south. It is around 50 meters to the former Turkish bath to the southeast .

history

This mosque was built in 1786 by the Islamic community of Kos with the support of Cezayirli Gazi Hasan Pascha , Kapudan Pascha on Kos. Building materials from other buildings from Roman and Byzantine times were used in the construction. The mosque is said to have been built over a Christian basilica dedicated to St. George.

building

The building is three-story and about 20 meters long and 15 meters wide and has a hipped roof covered with tiles . Inside, the mosque consists of arcades with small shops and a café on the ground floor, and an anteroom and prayer room on the upper floor. The only minaret , with a round pointed helmet , is on the northern corner of the prayer house.

The building is dilapidated and cannot be viewed inside.

In front of the mosque there is a fountain ( Şadirvan ) that was used for washing before prayer.
