history

Linopotis was founded in 1936 as a model rural settlement of the Italian occupation forces on Kos on an area of around 1000 hectares for Italian settlers. This model settlement was first called Anguillara , but also Fiorenza , Primavera and from 1939 Vittorio Egeo . In addition to Linopotis, a village in the Lambi area was laid out as a second settlement , today's Lambi (then also called: Torre di Lambi ). These model settlements were a long-term planned measure as part of the agro-cultural colonization propagated by the Italian fascists (see also: Italian Aegean Islands 1912–1943). The creation of such rural settlements on Kos and other islands as well as in Italy was also used as an employment measure for the unemployed between 1928 and 1934 . In Linopotis, the construction of soil improvement and waterworks (e.g. dams, retention basins, canals, etc.), a center of the new village and 25 farmhouses were built.

In October 1943, in the vicinity of Linopotis, several dozen Italian officers in captivity were shot by members of the German Wehrmacht in violation of international law and buried in six mass graves (see: Massacre of Kos ).

In December 2015, local demonstrations took place in Linopotis against the establishment of an initial reception hotspot for refugees.
